When your lease is ending, you have three clear paths: return the vehicle and lease or buy something new, buy out your current lease and keep the vehicle you already know, or return it and walk away.
The smartest first move is to contact your dealership 60 to 90 days before your lease-end date, so you have time to review your mileage and condition, compare your options, and avoid last-minute charges. At Galpin Mazda, you can complete a return no matter where your lease began, and our team will walk you through every choice before you decide.
First, Know Your Timeline
The biggest lease-end mistake is waiting until the final week.
Your lease agreement includes a specific maturity date, and the weeks leading up to it are when you have the most leverage and the most choices. Plan to start the conversation about 60 to 90 days out.
That window gives you time to check your remaining mileage against your contract allowance, address any wear-and-tear items, and shop your next vehicle without pressure. It also gives you room to compare what a buyout would cost against what a new lease or purchase would look like.
Your Three End-of-Lease Options
Option 1: Return and Lease or Buy Something New
This is the most common route for a reason. You hand back your current vehicle, close out the lease, and step into a newer model with the latest technology, safety features, and a fresh warranty.
If you have enjoyed your Mazda CX-5 or Mazda3 and want to keep that experience current, moving into a new lease or purchase keeps you in a Mazda without the long-term commitment of ownership.
Option 2: Buy Out Your Lease and Keep It
If you like the vehicle you already have, know its history, and it fits your life, buying it makes a lot of sense.
A lease buyout lets you purchase the vehicle for the residual value stated in your original contract, sometimes plus applicable taxes and fees. It can be an especially strong move if you are under your mileage limit and the vehicle is in good shape, because you already know exactly how it has been driven and maintained.
Option 3: Return and Walk Away
Maybe your needs have changed, you are driving less, or you simply want a break.
What to Check Before You Return
A smooth return comes down to preparation. Before your appointment, walk through these:
- Mileage. Compare your odometer to the allowance in your lease. If you are over, ask how excess mileage charges work for your specific agreement.
- Wear and tear. Look for anything beyond normal use: dents, deep scratches, curb-rashed wheels, seat damage, or windshield chips. Some items are worth addressing before you turn the vehicle in.
- Tires and brakes. Worn tires or brakes can count against you at return. Our service center can inspect them and tell you where you stand, and you can shop for replacement tires if you need them.
- Personal items and equipment. Clear out your belongings and make sure you have all keys, charging cables if applicable, and any accessories that came with the vehicle.
- Your documents. Bring your lease agreement, identification, and any maintenance records showing the vehicle was cared for.
One check worth doing yourself on the tires: insert a quarter into the tread with Washington’s head pointing down. If you can see the top of his head, you are at or below 4/32 of an inch, which is worth knowing before an inspector measures it rather than after.

Ready for Your Next Move?
A lease ending is not a deadline to dread. It is a chance to reset into the right vehicle and the right payment for where you are now. The sooner you start, the more options you keep on the table.
Lease-end terms, mileage allowances, excess mileage charges, wear-and-tear standards, disposition fees, and buyout figures are governed by your individual lease agreement and the terms of your leasing company; review your contract for the provisions that apply to you. Residual value and any applicable taxes and fees vary by contract. Vehicle condition assessments are based on inspection of your individual vehicle. Financing is subject to credit approval; terms vary and are not guaranteed. Program and offer eligibility is subject to change. See dealer for complete details.
