The all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata has been on sale for several months, and both customers and auto journalists have been raving about Mazda’s newest roadster. For this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Mazda took the new MX-5 and created two unique takes on lightweight, open-air performance with the MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster.
These two concepts take the three core values of the MX-5 Miata (lightweight, fun-to-drive, roadster) and bring the Miata to the next level of what a modern performance car can be. Mazda’s North American designers also used inspiration from vintage roadsters to create a classic look that remains true to the MX-5’s roadster heritage.
The MX-5 Spyder is the company’s interpretation of the classic vintage roadster, and focuses on the open-air experience with a custom bikini top developed by American Sunroof Corporation. The MX-5 Spyder also features special Mercury Silver paint, a carbon fiber aero kit, lightweight Yokoham ADVAN Racing RS II 17-inch wheels and a Spinneybeck PRIMA natural leather interior.
The MX-5 Speedster provides drivers with the ultimate open-top sports car experience, drawing inspiration from sports cars of the 1950s. The windshield was removed and weight was saved wherever possible, including the use of custom 16-inch RAYS Extreme Gram Lights wheels.
Additional features of the MX-5 Speedster include concept Blue Ether paint, an adjustable coilover suspension, Racing Beat center-mount exhaust, Alcantara trimmed carbon fiber Mu-Len Delta seats and carbon fiber doors. Weight was reduced more than 250 lbs. from the stock MX-5 Miata to just 2,080 lbs.
The MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster both use the responsive and efficient SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission found in every 2016 MX-5 Miata. For more information about the new 2016 MX-5 Miata, visit us at Galpin Mazda serving Los Angeles, CA.
